Similar to many other women, and men, in forestry, my youth was filled with adventures that took place in and around trees. I suspect that finding a white, waxy plant while alone in the woods might best mark the actual gateway to my career path. I was certain that I had discovered a species new to science! Even though Linnaeus had already named the parasitic plant as Monotropa uniflora (Indian pipe), I have maintained my curiosity about the complex interactions in nature and feel fortunate to be in a career where I can contribute to conserving our forests.
