At every environmental education or interpretation conference I have attended the number of women outweighed men by at least 50%. In this field, wages commensurate with the knowledge and skills needed for the job are rare. Too many environmental educators and interpreters work an entire adult career, only to retire without the means to fully retire. I am not sure if this wage reality is connected to a gender gap or not. Perhaps we simply do not put enough value on the results our society says it wants from this work, regardless of who is doing it. I am inspired by women who continue build knowledge and connections between people and their environment, doing that amazing work we so desperately need, while also finding creative ways to fund it, support it, advocate for it, and slowly change the tides.
