Consulting forester, Mid-Maine Forestry.

Here in Maine, I see unrealized potential. There are still far too few female field foresters. The number of women working in government, conservation organizations, land trusts, etc. has increased noticeably in the past 40 years that I’ve been practicing forestry. The number/percentage of women involved in on-the-ground forestry work involving muddy boots and tree marking paint has stayed stagnant at best. Stereotypes regarding the profession of forestry and increasing societal disconnect from the natural world around us are partly to blame. I don’t know the solution, but I do encourage every young person (especially women) who show a spark of interest to consider the profession of forestry.
