Welcome Daniel Godwin

Welcome Daniel Godwin, the Assistant Director of Fire Management for the Forest Stewards Guild and the Assistant Module Lead for Gravitas Peak Wildland Fire Module. Daniel works with a variety of partners to support getting “good fire” back onto the landscape to improve ecosystem services and reduce wildfire risk. Check out his staff bio on our website.

Daniel brings a diverse background in fire ecology and management. Recently, he has consulted on wildfire issues for the Department of Defense, completing wildfire risk assessments and fire management plans for Air Force, Army, and Army National Guard installations. He completed his PhD at the University of Missouri – Columbia, researching the effects on fire intensity on savanna tree mortality in Kruger National Park in South Africa. He also coordinated student support of regional prescribed fire implementation on public and private lands, providing job skills to students while helping partners complete their fire management goals. To help better support the needs of prescribed fire in the state, he also served on the Missouri Prescribed Fire Council.

Daniel started his fire career in Florida, working on an interagency prescribed fire module. Florida is an ideal opportunity to cut your teeth in prescribed fire because the abundance of opportunities for burning: he was often burning multiple times a week. Since then, he’s burned in nine different states and hopes to help put good fire on the ground in the other forty-one.
