Job Description:

Baxter State Park is a 209,644 acre public trust located in north-central Maine and headquartered in Millinocket.  Governor Percival Baxter made it his life’s obsession to purchase these lands and donate them to the people of the State of Maine.  With this gift he left a governance structure unique to all parks, a large endowment that allows the Park to operate independently from the State general fund, and several directives that describe how to manage the Park.  These include a focus on preserving the wildness of the Park above all else and providing “a show-place for those interested in forestry”. The Park seeks a professional manager to join our administrative team and dedicated staff to preserve, protect and effectively manage Maine’s largest wilderness Park.

The Resource Manager must have the skills and abilities to plan, manage and supervise an on-going exemplary forest management system including harvesting and silvicultural operations, forest road maintenance and  construction, forest inventories, forest modeling, resource monitoring and the maintenance of a detailed forest management plan. The position is responsible for significant education and outreach efforts in demonstrating the Park’s forest management to the educational community, forest industry, allied professionals and the general public. The Resource Manager must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities also include participation in the development of Park management plans and reports, wilderness and forest resource policy and procedures, annual budget and operational supervision as a member of the Park’s administrative team.  The successful candidate will enjoy one of the most interesting and varied forestry jobs in the Northeast.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree and three years experience in forest management, ecosystem management or a directly related natural resource field. Directly related experience may be substituted for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.  Supervisory experience and experience in wilderness resource management, while not required, is a strong asset to this position. Candidates must or be able to obtain licensure as a Licensed Forester from the Maine State Board of Licensure of Foresters within one (1) year from date of employment.

Skills, abilities and knowledge relevant to this position include:

  • planning skills
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
  • a focus on continuous improvement
  • strong personnel management skills
  • working knowledge of the Acadian Forest and silviculture
  • must be a self-starter
