Background
The Forest Stewards Guild is a national organization dedicated to practicing and promoting sustainable forestry through support of professional practice, forest policy, and research. Forest Stewards Guild members include natural resource professionals throughout the United States and Canada. The Guild currently employs nine regular staff with offices in Madison, WI; Mankato, MN; Santa Fe, NM; and Freeport, ME.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Communications Coordinator will manage our communications across platforms. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Write and develop content for our print and electronic newsletters, donor-related materials, and other publications.
  • Develop and execute an integrated communications plan using multiple platforms, including print, digital, and social media.
  • Lead the re-development of our organization’s website.
  • Coordinate member and supporter communications about our program activities.
  • Help tell the story of the Guild and the incredible work of our members.
  • Provide support for our membership program, including database management.
  • Support our Director Finance and Administration and our Development Coordinator on team tasks in our Madison office.

Qualifications

  • Strong and well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid technical writing skills with demonstrated ability to communicate about natural resources issues with both professional and general audiences
  • Knowledge of web-site development and management
  • Diverse professional experience in communications including print-based, web-based, and social media
  • Creativity and a passion and talent for good story-telling
  • Detail-oriented tendencies with good organizational and time management skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, email marketing applications, and website content management systems
  • A hard worker and self-starter with the ability to think and act strategically
  • A minimum of an undergraduate-level degree in a relevant field such as communications, management, natural resources, or liberal arts
  • Experience in similar organizations, with duties involving communications, development, or program-related work
  • Excellent personal skills, and demonstrated team player
  • Some knowledge of design and visual communications is strongly preferred
  • Previous experience with non-profit organizations and in conservation and natural resources is strongly preferred.  

Location
The position is based at the Guild’s office at 612 W. Main Street, Madison, WI. Flexibility for other work locations may be considered.

Wages and Benefits
The starting pay range will be commensurate with experience. An offer to the preferred applicant will be based on experience and demonstrated capabilities.

Paid leave and paid holiday benefits are provided. Employer-sponsored comprehensive health care and dental care coverage is available after 60 days of continuous employment. Participation in a retirement plan with an employer match is available after 90 days. We will consider flexible work schedules to accommodate family or other commitments.
