Field Tour WORKING Agenda
Examine various silvicultural treatments in a variety of forest types and discuss the implications of deer browse, invasive plants and climate change on applying silviculture. Compare shortwood cut-to-length logging methods and whole tree harvesting . Discuss the impact of market conditions on silvicultural and harvesting options. Review harvest design and marking protocols including identification of wetlands and other fragile sites, harvest by prescription and mark to leave strategies.
Note: Carpooling is strongly encouraged.
9:00 AM Refreshments and introductions Full Circle Hill & Valley owned by Ehrhard Frost 6078 Route 113 Thetford Center, VT 05075
9:30 AM Site I: Frost property, quick stop to examine overstory removal with 15 sq. ft. of residual Legacy Tree BA/acre and established balsam fir understory.
10:00 AM Load up & car pool to Strafford, VT
10:30 AM Site II: Crocker property to examine timber sale completed in winter 2017 on 35 acres in sugar maple dominated, multiaged (150/90/20-30)Northern hardwood stand. Previously harvested in winter 2001, former sugar bush. Composition: sugar maple, white ash, beech, yellow birch & basswood. Group selection and 2 patch cuts. Cut by a combination prescription, mark to leave and mark to cut. Operated with a Rottne harvester & 6 wheeled forwarder, Cat 515 skidder and JD 650 bulldozer for trail work, mechanical felling (40%) and hand felling (60%).
12:30 PM Load up & car pool back to Thetford, VT
1:00 PM Site III: Thetford Town Forest. Lunch (BYO) on the landing/by the pond. Examine completed portion (about 60-65 acres ) of timber sale (86 acres). White pine/red oak/red maple & white pine forest types, old field. Overstory removal w/group retention, shelterwood, group selection; you tell me!! Prescription, mark to leave and mark to cut with exclusions of wetlands and fragile sites. Whole tree harvesting and chipping 100% mechanical. Operated with a Tigercat feller-buncher, Cat 525 skidders, loader, slasher/loader/delimber, w/an excavator on site to build & repair trails.
2:30 PM Load up and travel a mile to Wren property and Maple Shade Farm. Examine timber sales completed Feb. 2017. OSR w/retention in white pine type infected w/pine canker (hardwood sites) on about 3 acres of each property. Thinning and group selection in N. hardwood/hemlock stands, 1st thinning in 80 year old white pine, group selection & thinning in red oak/hemlock. Cut by prescription, mark to leave and mark to cut. Operated w/Cat tracked harvester, some hand felling & Rottne 6 wheeled forwarder (CTL).
4:30 PM Return to Full Circle, pickup vehicles and proceed to the Colatina.
