Summer 2017 Forest Stewards Guild Internships
The Forest Stewards Guild invites students at the college or graduate level to work on forest-related issues in New Mexico. We are offering a paid 8-week summer internship and one unpaid 4-8 week internship. The paid and unpaid positions will be based out of our Santa Fe office. Internships will be grounded in active projects. Staff will work to tailor the workload to the student’s interests and schedule. Previous interns have assisted Guild staff in a variety of projects including community forestry, national policy, ecological monitoring, and youth training initiatives.
Opportunities to Make a Difference in 2017
During the summer, the Forest Stewards Guild has a number of exciting projects in which a motivated intern could make a difference.
- The Guild’s Forest Stewards Youth Corps program is a great chance for interns to share skills and inspire young adults from rural New Mexico communities to pursue careers in natural resource management. Interns will make field visits to FSYC crews located throughout the state and help instruct them in ecological monitoring techniques. (http://www.forestguild.org/new-mexico-youth-conservation-corps).
- The Guild is working with several National Forests in New Mexico to restore resilience to ponderosa pine and dry mixed conifer ecosystems using a collaborative, multiparty approach. Interns have opportunities to engage in project planning, monitoring, outreach, tree thinning, and prescribed burning (www.zunimountainscollaborative.org).
- Interns may assist the Guild in building Fire Adapted Communities in New Mexico by updating Community Wildfire Protection Plans and educating homeowners about ways to reduce wildfire risk (www.fireadaptednewmexico.org; www.forestguild.org/controlledburning).
- Interns may help the Guild on a research project (http://www.forestguild.org/research).
Interested students should submit a one-page cover letter and resume to Matt Piccarello (firstname.lastname@example.org) by February 20th. Matt can also be reached at 505.983.8992 ext. 14. Please specify your preferred work location (WI or NM), earliest available start date, and areas of interest based on the opportunities listed above. In general, the Forest Stewards Guild seeks interns with experience in forestry and/or ecology-based fieldwork and excellent data collection and communication skills. Interns will be responsible for lodging and living expenses in either Santa Fe NM . A pdf version of the announcement is available for download here.
